Hitachi, NEC, Casio Delay Mobile Phone Merger Plan

The mobile phone merger plan jointly initiated by Hitachi, NEC, and Casio, in September 2009 to integrate their respective mobile phone businesses is to be delayed by at least a month, the Kyoto News reported on February 28. The plan was originally set to launch in April 2010. The new JV will be renamed NEC Casio Mobile Communications, according to the same source. NEC currently supplies mobile terminals for NTT DoCoMo and SoftBank Mobile. Casio Hitachi Mobile, a joint venture established by Casio and Hitachi since 2004, is a supplier of CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) phones for KDDI and SoftBank Mobile in Japan, Verizon in the United States, and LG in Korea.
